Mussels “Avignon” cooked, Netherlands *fresh

Freshly cooked mussels from Netherlands. 500g vacuum pack.

Mussels are a little bit like the chicken of the sea: hugely versatile. You can steam them, boil them, stir-fry them, deep-fry them, bake them in the oven and grill them on the barbecue. You can also combine them endlessly with all kinds of ingredients. And the great thing is: they’re not just delicious, they’re also very good for you.

Super healthy!
For instance, mussels contain little fat but they are bursting with proteins, minerals, calcium, phosphorus and vitamins. And the fat they do contain is of the healthy type, unsaturated fatty acids. We could go on. Because mussels also have a high iodine content and contain selenium, copper and iron. You get the picture: mussels are super healthy!

Good to know

Mussels eat plankton from sea water. They absorb the water, filter plankton from it and release the water again. Did you know these little critters can process up to 100 litres of water a day? How fast they grow ultimately depends on their location. It actually makes sense – they grow fastest in places exposed to flows of very nutrient-rich water.

Tips
After opening vacuum pack, do not be afraid that some of mussels are opened. It is natural reaction after being in vacuum - they need some breath. Place them immediately in cold water for some minutes (can shake a little) and mussels will close shells and ready to cook.
